Screen videos (or also called screencasts) are an effective tool to demonstrate and explain features of a website. Screen videos are perfect for conveying know-how or convincing a potential prospect about your product.

Screencast possibilities

There are essentially four options when presenting your website in video. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages. The following is a description of each option.

Classic screencast

In a classic screencast, the website is recorded and a voiceover is added. With the help of animations and focus effects, attention can be drawn to individual elements to highlight them.
A screencast is particularly useful when complex applications with a wide range of functions need to be presented.

Website Promo Video / App Promo Video

In a website promo video, individual parts or pages are placed in a free space and animated. The difference to the classic screencast is that individual functions of the website are not described in detail, but only their advantages are brought to the point.
The advantage of a promo video is obvious: it looks simply chic and lets the website shine in a modern light. But that's not all - a promo video is also the cheapest option in terms of implementation.

Explainer video style website

Another option is to display parts of the website in explainer video style. This way, the website can be included in an explainer video and the features of your website can be explained, while at the same time picking up the viewers with a suitable storytelling.
In our video for ViveLaCar, we took a similar approach. It was important to the client that parts of the application could be seen. However, a classic screencast was not desired, as the screen video would stand out too much from the rest of the video - so elements and parts of the website were traced in LineArt style to achieve the desired effect.

advantage

here is that the screen video can be directly integrated into an explainer video. In addition, a multilingual version is thus much easier to implement.

Animated screencast

Another option is to recreate a website. In contrast to rebuilding in explainer video style, here the website is rebuilt 1 to 1 in order to be able to enrich the website with animations. This turns a classic screencast into a feast for the eyes.

Combination of several variants

The mixture makes the difference - the video is a versatile medium, it can be shortened and shared, for example. But a video can also be super combined with other videos - so the different advantages from the worlds of explainer videos and those of screen videos can be combined. Where the pure screencast lacks storytelling - an explainer video comes up with stories and images to compensate for exactly this point.
In our video for PlusIT, we did just that. The whiteboard video was to be enriched with a short screen video, so in addition to the advantages of the product, a part of the range of functions was also presented.

Conclusion - What kind is the right one ?

Important in the decision is on the one hand the product and on the other hand the prospect. For example, if your prospect has already had contact with your product and would now like to learn more about the range of functions, it makes a lot of sense to satisfy the need with the help of a classic screen video.
However, if it's a person who has never been in contact with your product, it may make more sense to use an explainer video to get the customer excited about learning more about the product. Storytelling, gripping images that stay in the mind and an appropriate background with suitable music and a voiceover ensure the desired effect here. In the further course, a classic screencast can then be used to provide your prospect with the final impulse.
A website promo video is something for the eye - it looks modern, fresh and attracts
attention to itself. Perfect for making a prospect more palatable to additional features. It focuses on the essentials here. A few key points paired with screenshot and an exciting background music make the video a feast for the eyes.
