Scribble or Whiteboard Video - What's the difference?

In our post about Whiteboard Videos, we've already explained to you why whiteboard videos may seem at first to be simply the cheapest and simplest version of an explainer video, but nevertheless have a big Oho effect.
In the meantime, you may have looked a little deeper into the topic of explainer videos and also come across the term "scribble" video. Are you wondering how it differs from whiteboard video?
Or you are completely new to the topic of "explainer video" and just happened to land on this page. In this case, welcome!
Feel free to check out our post about everything you need to know about explainer video - it's perfect as an introduction to the topic of explainer video animation.
Whatever applies to you, we'll now take a closer look at the distinction between whiteboard and scribble videos to finally shed some light on the subject.
We bring light into the darkness

Scribble-Dibble, what? - What is a Scribble Video?

The word "scribble" comes from the Latin word "scribere", which means to write. The English word "scribble" literally means "scribble", "scribble". In German Sprachgebrauch we understand "scribble" to mean something more like a "erste[r], noch nicht endgültige[r] Entwurf für eine Werbegrafik, - fotografie".

The truth lies somewhere in between.

The term scribble video is used to refer to the video style rather than a new video style - because it is an animated video just like line art or flat design. The scribble style is characterized by drawing a series of related graphics and - this is the peculiarity - in front of the viewers' eyes. Often, an animated (or real) hand is inserted into the video, which draws the objects, graphics or people in the video virtually in real time. Later, these graphics or objects can be animated so that they are given "real life" - as you can see, the possibilities are endless.
A good scribble video example can be found here. The figures in this video were first drawn in scribble style, then added color, and only lastly animated, at which point they began to move "on their own".
But where is the difference to the whiteboard video now?

Aha, that's the difference! - Whiteboard vs. Scribble or Whiteboard = Scribble?

The terms "scribble" and "whiteboard" are not easy to tell apart. Often they are even used synonymously. However, the following table can clarify that the styles do not quite refer to the same facts:

Scribble

Whiteboard

Sketchy (pencil) drawingSketchy (pencil) drawing
Drawing is created "live" in front of the spectatorDrawing is created "live" in front of the spectator
Drawing hand is visibleDrawing hand is visible
Background mostly white, can also be coloredBackground mostly white (therefore "whiteboard")

Designates the drawing style

Designates the background

The difference is simply that "scribble" refers to the drawing style, while "whiteboard" refers to the background of the video. A whiteboard video can be produced in the scribble style as well as in the lay-out technique.
However, this is often not the case. Whiteboard videos are usually drawn in scribble style, so the confusion and synonymous use of the terms is obvious.
But what advantage does a scribble style video give you?

Why Scribble Videos Reduce Complexity

Scribble videos are drawn "live" in front of the viewer. The supposed artist "draws" a series of related graphics in a minimalist, sketchy drawing style. Thus, the video develops stroke by stroke, frame by frame before the viewer's eyes, capturing their attention.
Whiteboard or scribble style videos are all about the narrative - the story they want to tell. Through such a narrative, the emotions occurring in the viewer are directly mapped. The message to be conveyed comes across crystal clear to the viewer. This allows the viewer to actively participate in the creation of your story and, of course, to empathize with your product much better. So even before the obvious sales/advertising message, you awaken the need for your product in your customer.

Make scribble videos yourself?

Now you are wondering if you can make a scribble video yourself? Yes! On Youtube you can find numerous examples of how to create a scribble video for free. In addition, there is also scribble software, but with their help you can create rather static animations.
For a high-quality and professional video, it is actually more worthwhile to commission an explainer video agency with the production of a real animation. This does not necessarily have to be cost-intensive, but it has proven to have a significantly greater effect.
